Annual Banquet
The Fifth Annual Awards Banquet was held on May13 and 14,1997 at Folan's
Cornucopia Restaurant, Kelley Boulevard, North Attleborough. There are two nights so
that everyone gets a chance to be in the spotlight with their team and receive an award.
Tuesday night featured all Under 8, all Under 10 players and the Under 12 Boys.
Wednesday night featured the Under 12 Girls and all Under14 and Under 16/17/19
players. Trophies were presented to each player for their participation in the Club's Fifth
Anniversary Season.

Spring Fling
The Parents Appreciation Dance was held on Friday, May16,1997 at 7:30P.M. at the
Knights of Columbus Hall, Smith Street at Landry Avenue. This event started a few years
ago and gives the parents a night out without the kids. This is a purely social event with
Midnight Ltd. DJ Bill Mendes providing the music. There were raffles with some really
good prizes. Unfortunately, only twenty people bothered to show up for what was an
enjoyable night out. Unfortunately, this will be the last dance the Club sponsors.

Indoor Soccer Deflated!
The indoor soccer season came to a sudden and unexpected end when the April Fool's
Day Blizzard took the Milford bubble down. It was expected to be operational within a
few days as happened a few years ago, however, this time the repair crew arrived but
determined that the bubble could not be repaired. A new bubble has been ordered and
will be in place for next year. The Mansfield bubble also came down and was also
destroyed. The Bridgewater Dome was quickly restored and our three teams there were
able to finish their seasons. Club officers have agreed to cancel the season because there
was just no way that all the games could be rescheduled properly. A rebate is being
prepared for distribution to the players affected by the cancellation of the balance of the
third session. Officers of the North Soccer Club hope that you all had an enjoyable indoor
season. This year we had a record of more than 250 players on 21 different teams. Also
thanks to the parents who trekked up to Milford and Bridgewater to support and cheer on
their teams

Spring Soccer is Here
Mother Nature really threw quite a surprise at us this year with the blizzard and rain.
AMVET Blvd. School Fields remained waterlogged for a while but Rose and Kelly Fields
came through pretty well. Unfortunately, the AMVET grounds were not built with
proper drainage as were Rose and Kelly Fields. The BAYS League extended the make
up time to reschedule games by an extra week. Hopefully all games will be played
reasonably on time. Our Spring program is now in its fifth season and has grown to 15
teams and over more than 180 players. We have a boys and girls Under 8 team playing in
Under 10 Division 4 this year. (BAYS does not have an Under8 Division) The water
should be turned on this year at Rose Field once the multitude of new regulations are
addressed regarding the connection to the water supply. The Field is holding up pretty
well and new gates have been installed along with a bicycle trap to keep bikes off of the
grass. This has been the cause of the diagonal line across the field. Hopefully the grass
can be restored this summer.

Improvement Project. A portion of the proceeds from orders on these forms will be
donated to the Club. Samples are in the Free Press window. |
Revolution Tickets
The New England Revolution season has started with a new Coach, many new players,
new uniforms and an opening day that set records for attendance. The US National team
tied Mexico and the Revolution defeated Tampa Bay to complete a great day of soccer .
The Club has purchased two season tickets again this year. These tickets will be awarded
to players by random drawing of players who have played all year with the Club. There
are 303 registered players this year and 103 have played all year. There are 16 home
games and one additional international match with the Revolution playing a team from
Brazil!

Foxborough Cup
The North Soccer Club returned in force to the Foxborough Cup Tournament with 11
team s signed up to play on Memorial Day weekend. This has been a fun event for the
past few years and NSC teams have been fairly successful in Foxboro .The atmosphere is
good, and players go to cheer for other NSC teams playing during the day. Saturday is
girls day and Sunday is boys day. Monday is the return day for each qualifying team to
vie for the Division Champion Trophies. Saturday was a good soccer day but Sunday
featured a light shower that started at 8:30A.M. and continued heavily until the end of the
day. Some light shower! Five teams returned Monday with the Under 14 Girls Stars
winning the A Division and the Under12 Girls Storm winning their A Division. The
Under 16Girls Strikers and Under 17 Boys Hurricanes played in the John Smith
Tournament at Gordon College. The girls won second place and the boys defended their
Championship winning the Under19 Division.

Website
The North Soccer Club website has been up and running for a while now and it continues
to grow with new features and a listing inYahoo Boston. This site is one of the best youth
soccer sites you will find and our email has been very positive. Many people have visited
the site and a few even want to borrow some of the features. Webmaster Bill Mendes
(father of 2 NSC soccer playing daughters) continues to add features to the site. You can
now see the Club jackets and warm-up suits, spring schedules, Soccer Links and even a
link to Mapquest for you to join (no charge) or see maps to our fields. (The maps may
not appear on America Online).Bill is looking for more pictures of game action. Even if
the picture looks distant, it can be scanned. Some of the current pictures were quite
distant originally. Although you will not be able to register on-line, we are hoping to get
an MYSA Registration form on the site so that you can copy it and prepare it in advance.
Also coming is a Current Events section. Any suggestions you have will be greatly
appreciated. You can email through the site or give your suggestions to any Club Officer.

Soccer Camp
The North Soccer Club will be sponsoring two Camps again this year. The John Smith
Camp is geared to younger and inexperienced or Recreational players. This year it will be
held starting at 4:00PM as it had been in prior years. The MLS Camp will be held in the
morning and is intended for the travel team player or more experienced players. Details
will be mailed out directly by each Camp. The Smith Camp will be held July 21-25 and
the MLS Camp is scheduled for the week of August 4-8. Cost is in the range of $85-$95
per player with discounts available for more than one child from the same family. Groups
of 10 or more may attend as a team and have their own Instructor. Information is
tentative at this time but we are looking to have Northeastern University run a pre-season
camp for high school boys and girls only during the week of August 11-15. This would
also be an evening camp.

Soccer Night in N.A.
Rocketeer Soccer, the NA High School Boys soccer parents group will be sponsoring the
Rocketeer Soccer Jamboree on Tuesday, August 26, 1997. The feature event will be the
final pre-season scrimmage between NCAA Division 1 teams from Northeastern
University and Boston College. This will be a great opportunity for the youth players to
see some top college soccer players as they prepare to open the season.

Rec. Soccer Signup
The Park & Recreation Department Youth Soccer Program registration closed on June
2,1997. A waiting list will be kept for any late registrations. This program starts with the
"Cub Club" (instructional) up thru Under14. The Club does not recommend the Under14
age group as this will not provide any additional benefit to U14 players. Also there will
most likely not be enough girls to field teams. Last year we picked up the girls who had
signed up for the Rec. soccer program. Otherwise, the Rec. program is a lot of fun! Call
the Rec. Dept. for more details at 699-0145. |
Our Treasurer is back!
NSC Treasurer Steve Dailey has recovered from his recent disability and returned to
work and duty as Club Treasurer and Coach of the Under 17 Boys Hurricanes. Steve
recovered the sight in his left eye after a four month recovery period. Thanks to Club
Secretary Merilyn Schneider who filled in for Steve handling deposits for those months.
